One of the oldest Russian city was founded no later than 862 year.
According to chronicles Rurik has come to reign right here, and here the Russian nationhood was born. In the Middle Ages city was the center of Novgorod Russia, later of the Novgorod land, which was called the Novgorod Republic. At that time the city had the official name – Lord Novgorod the Great. Novgorod grew rapidly and by the end of the X century became a large rich trading city, the capital of a vast land - "Lord of Novgorod the Great". Almost the entire Russian North from the Golf of Finland to the shore of the Arctic Ocean and the mountain ranges of the Urals was under control of Novgorod.

At the Saint Sophia Cathedral (visit) there are preserved fragments of frescoes of XI-XII centuries. Particularly distinguished among the icons is the miraculous icon "The Sign of the Mother of God"'.
Also You will see Kokui Tower (visial observation) – the highest tower of Kremlin, the Episcopal Chamber (Chamber of Facets) (visial observation) - the only Russian Gothic civil building in Russia, where all the most important events took place - the reception of ambassadors, the meetings of the Novgorod "parliament", receptions, monument the Millennium of Russia, recalling of its form veche bell, which tells about the outstanding figures of Russian history.
Excursion to Yaroslav Court and Ancient Trade Yard.
Architectural complex of the Trade side on the right bank of the Volkhov. There are remains valuable monuments of Novgorod architecture among which are the church of St. John on Opoka, St, Nicholas Cathedral, the church of St. George on Torgu, the church of Paraskeva-Pyatnitsa, Cherch Uspenja on Torgu, church of the wives, church of Procopius, the Gate Tower of the Guest Court (only visial observation).
There you will see a large princely temple of the 12th century, and merchant churches that were used not only as places for prayer, but also as warehouses for storing goods. In the 17-18 centuries on the place of Trade was built Gostiny Dvor with Gate Tower, through the arches of which it was possible to enter the inside.

Bus excursion to Yuriev Monastery, which is located at the sources of Volkhov near Lake Ilmen, with a visit to St George's Cathedral.

You will see the church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin that has survived to our days. The church was built in the 8th century. The guide will tell you about Ilmen lake. From the shore a beautiful views of St.John's Monastery (active) opens. Yuriev Monastery is a landmark place. It was founded in 1030 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise. Since then, it became the spiritual center of Novgorod Rus and the burial vault of Novgorod princes.
The main attraction of the monastery is the St. George's Cathedral (visit) (1119), where fragments of the frescoes of the 12th century have survived. Cathedral is one of the few preserved monuments of ancient Russian architecture of the pre-Mongol period, that have survived to this day.
Excursion to the museum of Wooden Architecture «Vitoslavlitsy».
Located on the banks of Lake Myachino and the VolkhovRiver, at St. George Monastery there is an open-air museum of wooden architecture Vitoslavlitsy. This is one of the most picturesque places in the Novgorod region. Izbas (village houses), chapels and churches form streets like those in old Russian villages. Restorers managed to preserve the unique works of Novgorodian carpenters. The buildings on display are so magnificent that they need no introduction. To get to know how Russian people lived many years ago, one must visit any of the izbas.
