Piskarevskoe cemetery
![]() |
This sobering place conveys the scale of tragedy that St. Petersburg (then called Leningrad) lived through during the Second World War (the 900-day Siege of Leningrad). For over 2 and a half years the Nazis kept Leningrad under siege, but its heroic defenders, both soldiers and civilians, did not surrender. Hundreds of thousands of people died in the city (mostly of cold and starvation) during the siege. About half a million, including 420,000 civilians are buried in the Piskarevskoe Cemetery's 186 mass graves. The slightly raised mounds are marked by year and a long alley leads the visitor to a monument with a statue of the Motherland, portrayed as a grieving woman.

The monument to the heroic defenders of Leningrad
![]() |
This impressive monument is the focal point of Ploschad Pobedy (Victory Square) and is hard to miss on the main road from St. Petersburg's international airport.
The monument, built in the shape of a huge broken ring represents all the efforts it took to break the 900-day Siege of Leningrad. Decorated Russian architect Sergei Speransky won the competition with his knowledge of city construction design and the pervasiveness of the theme of World War II victory in his art. As early as 1946, he was active in the restoration of Minsk and the creation of a World War II monument there. The tall and clean obelisk, which rises up from the broken ring design will surely attract your attention if you enter St. Petersburg from the airport or from E-95 highway. The sculptural ensemble placed at the pedestal of the obelisk is one of the best examples of Soviet monumental art dedicated to World War II Victory.

The museum of political history of Russia

The State Museum of Russian Political History originates in the first State Museum of Revolution founded in October, 9, 1919, Petrograd. There were a lot of outstanding statesmen, scientists, artists, and writers who participated in the museum creation: M. Gorkiy, A. Lunatcharsky, the Academic S. Oldenburg, (before the Revolution he had been one of the leaders of Constitutional Democrats' party) the revolutioners V. Figner, M. Novorussliy, A. Morozov. Since 1955 the museum is located in two buildings that were built at the beginning of the 20th century, on Petrogradskaya side. The former was built in 1904-1906 by the architect Gogen's plan and it was owned by the brilliant ballet dancer Matilda Kshesinskaya. The latter was built in 1905 by the architect Meltzer for baron Brandt, the famous timber merchant.
In 1917 Kshesinskaya's comfortable house was turned into the bolsheviks' staff. Right there since March to June 1917 there were the Central and Petrograd Committees of Russian Social Democratic Party of Workers (RSDRP), the bolsheviks' military organization and the soldier club "Pravda" ("The Truth").
The museum collection (more than 400 thousands of exhibits) and its fortune describe that epoche completely.

The museum of blockade of Leningrad
![]() |
The history of The State Memorial Museum of Leningrad Defense and the Siege began in December 1943 when the military Council of Leningrad Front adopted the decision to organize the exhibition «Heroic Defense of Leningrad». Within a short period of time a great deal of work was done by artist's architects, historians, many of whom were especially commissioned from the active sections of the front. The exhibition was open on the 30th of April 1944, and in January 1946 it was reorganized as the Museum of Leningrad Defense. The exhibits of the museum, numbered 37 654 pieces, were exposed in 37 halls the total area of which was about 40 000 m2. The exhibition circumstantially elucidated the Leningrad battle, the activities of troops to break the blockade, hard 900 days of the siege, the heroic labor of the workers of plants and factories. In 1949 visitors were not allowed any more to the museum upon the pretext of the reconstruction of the halls, and in March 1953 the museum was completely liquidated in connection of the so called «Leningrad trial». In 1988 war and labor veterans, survivors of the siege, writers, artists, journalists raised their voices for the defense of the devastated museum. The museum was again open on the 8th of September 1989. Nowadays its name is State Memorial Museum of Leningrad Defense and the Siege. The visitors get acquainted with the permanent display «The history of Leningrad Defense and the Siege».

The Suvorov memorial museum
![]() |
This museum is devoted to one of Russia's most outstanding generals, the military strategist and army commander Alexander Vasilyevich Suvorov (1730-1800), who excelled in his service to the state during the reign of Empress Catherine the Great and Emperor Paul I. Suvorov's charismatic personality won him respect and admiration among his troops, a crucial element in helping the general to achieve his military goals. Suvorov rose to fame during the Crimean Wars against Napoleon's France, when he defeated several leading French generals in the challenging terrain of the Alps.
The newly refurbished museum is packed with military memorabilia from Suvorov's times, including weapons, banners, uniforms and excellent models and large panoramas recreating historic battlefields.
When passing by the museum's host building, take a look at the two large mosaics, which decorate its facade. Both are based on historical events; the left-hand one features «Suvorov Crossing the Alps» and the right-hand one illustrates «Suvorov leaving home for the campaign of 1799».

The museum is located in a building constructed as a government institution, and is a typical example of non-residential building in St. Petersburg built at the turn of the 20th century. From 1972 to 1990, the Narvskaya Gate was a public museum dedicated to the history of the revolution. It is now a historic monument of federal importance. The focus of the museum’s collection is the history of the road along the southwest coast of the Gulf of Finland, from the 18th century to the present day.
