Roerich memorial museum

Nicholas Roerich's estate-museum in the village of Izvara is a site featuring a unique blend of nature, archaeology, architecture, history and culture – the first ever state museum in Russia dedicated to Nikolay Konstantinovich Roerich – famous Russian painter, scholar, traveler and public figure, who spent his formative years in this old Russian estate. Roerich's estate-museum in Izvara opened in 1984. At present the estate comprises nine buildings constructed in the 18-20 centuries, an old park and spring lakes, situated on the land covering 60 hectares. The manor house of the 18th century contains the permanent and special exhibitions dedicated to the life and art of Nicholas Roerich. Displayed artifacts from the Russian period of his life illustrate the influence of Izvara on Roerich's art and provide the specific atmosphere of a Russian estate. The presented materials illustrate development of Roerich's idea about the preservation of human cultural values, embodied in Roerich's Pact (signed in Washington in 1935). Also on display are Roerich's early works: a sketch to the fresco «Kievan Bogatyrs’ Evening» (1896), a study entitled «The Ferns» (1890-s); the painter’s autographs, personal belongings and furniture. The school house of the Agricultural Colony constructed in art-nouveau style and its in-built church of Our Lady of Kazan (currently functioning) also make part of the museum complex.

Historic Architectural and Archeological Reserve Museum Staraya Ladoga

When getting to Staraya (Old) Ladoga, one immediately feels fascination of this place. Its aura makes you forget about the present. Staraya Ladoga is a unique country, no matter how you come to realize that - using your mind to imagine people who lived their lives here almost 1250 years ago or your senses to perceive the spirit of the place.  Located at a scenery bend of the Volkhov River, Staraya Ladoga is 120 km far from St.Petersburg. The ancient waterway «from the Varangians to the Greeks» that passed here made Staraya Ladoga a crossing point of the peoples and cultures to the benefit of its inhabitants.  The relatively small territory of 190 hectares retains 160 monuments of the 8th -20th centuries. The museum founded in 1966 was opened for visitors in July 1971. The current status of the whole territory of the ancient town and its surroundings is a historic architectural and archeological reserve museum. More than 200 ths units are deposited in the museum funds, numerous fragments of destroyed murals being among them. Museum exhibits are arranged in nearly all monuments of the reserve. The archeological collection of the Staraya Ladoga museum is considered one of the most interesting ones of that kind in Russia. The ethnographic exhibit includes belongings of peasants, petty bourgeoises, noble people and merchants and depicts the private life of different classes of Ladoga. The prevailing trades that brought income to local residents were quarrying, timber cutting, shipping, fishing, farriery and blacksmithing. Weaving, spinning and woodworking were also developed.
More than 400 works, mostly landscape and genre paintings by remarkable Russian and Soviet artists who worked in Staraya Ladoga, are featured in the art collection of the reserve museum.

Tikhvin

The Tikhvin Memorial Museum of History, Architecture and Art located in two buildings of the Bolshoi Bogorodichno-Uspensky Monastery (Big Monastery of the Assumption of Our Lady) shares the site with the new-born monastery community. The ancient Russian town of Tikhvin was first mentioned in the chronicles in the late 14th century in connection with the miraculous apparition of the icon of Our Lady (Odigitria) here. Later on the fortress-monastery was raised around and became the core of the future town. The flourishing of the town as a trade and craft center falls on the 17th - middle 19th centuries. The museum collection numbers 27 ths. items deposited in the funds of archeology, numismatics, arms, history and tradition, fine and applied arts, photography, documents and rare books. Five permanent displays are open to visitors. Fortress Oreshek (Sсhlisselburg)

Schlisselburg Fortress is one of the oldest fortress in Russia. It was built in 1323 by the citizens of Novgorod on Orekhovy Island at the mouth of Neva ans lake Ladoga. Oreshek proved to be imposing obstacle in the path of its enemies. In 1612, however, the Swedes seized the fortress an renamed it Noteburg. They controlled it for the next 90 years. In the initial stages of the Northern War with Sweden (1700-1721), in 1702 Peter the Great’s army stormed the fortress and recaptured it.  In recognition of significance of this victory, Peter changed the name of the fortress to Schlissenburg, or «key city». Up until 1917, Shlissenburg Fortress served as a place of incarceration for political prisoners. During the Great Patriotic war the defenders of the fortress inscribed a new page in history. For 500 years the garrison stood firm on its ancient ground, preventing the siege from completely closing around Leningrad.
