The Eliseev Palace first opened in 1997 as the Taleon Club, St. Petersburg’s premier up-scale club and casino, and which still occupies the front part of the palace, along the Moika River.
The Eliseev Palace Hotel opened in May 2003 after a two-year restoration of a part of the existing space within the Taleon Club, as well as adjoining interior wings that were previously residential.
The name "Eliseev" commemorates the powerful Russian merchant family who built and resided in the Palace for most of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, the Eliseev Palace is a testament to the achievements of both past and present Russia.

Dmitri Shostakovich played a sonata for Sergei Prokofiev in the latter's suite, and Elton John performed in L'Europe Restaurant. Construction of the buildings now housing the hotel, located in the very heart of St. Petersburg on Nevsky Prospekt and Mikhailovskaya Street, began in the 1820s. The first hotel on this site, known as the Cuolon, appeared in 1830 and was then integrated with neighbouring houses by Carlo Rossi, who employed a Neo-Baroque fa?ade to unite the existing buildings. This united structure evolved into the Hotel de l'Europe, the dream child of the Evropeyskaya Hotel Company, which opened its doors in January of 1875. At the turn of the century the Swedish-Russian architect Fyodor Lidval redesigned much of the hotel's interior, adding the beautiful Art Nouveau features which still exist today.
The hotel reinvented itself numerous times through the First World War and post-revolutionary periods as a hospital, orphanage and centre of bureaucratic operations.
The building itself has been classified as a national and cultural landmark and is to be preserved as a historical monument.

The Kempinski Hotel Moika 22 is housed in a Petersburg mansion, designed by Basil von Witte in 1853, during the reign of Tsar Nicholas I.
